Tax Preparation Checklist
The following items should be on hand when you file your taxes. We can never stress the importance of record-keeping enough. Always keep the following with your important paperwork and bring them out before you start working on your tax return
- Prior year's tax return
- Forms 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-OID for interest and dividends
- Forms W-2 for wages
- Forms 1095A, 1095B and 1095C for Healthcare coverage
- All information for sales of stocks or business assets (date purchased, amount paid, date sold, sales price)
- Business and rental income
- Forms 1099-G for unemployment and other government payments
- Forms 1099-R for retirement distributions
- Schedules K-1 for partnerships, S corporations, estates and trusts
All receipts for the following:
- Home mortgage interest
- Property taxes
- DMV registrations
- Charitable donations
- Unreimbursed employee business expenses
- Closing statements for refinances of mortgages
- Medical and dental expenses
All receipts for business and rental expenses summarized by type of expense. Examples:
- Total mileage for vehicles
- Total mileage used for business for vehicles
- Auto expenses
- Materials expense
- Labor expense
- Office expense
- Utilities
- etc., etc., etc.
